Samburu National Reserve is renowned for its rich wildlife and unique biodiversity, making it a top Samburu safari destination. This protected area is celebrated for its rare northern specialist species, including the Grevy Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk, and the Beisa Oryx—collectively known as the Samburu Special. The reserve is also home to a significant population of over 900 elephants.

Predators like the Lion, Leopard, and Cheetah are major attractions in Samburu. Notably, the reserve is known for Kamunyak, the Miracle Lioness, famous for adopting a baby Oryx. Visitors frequently spot wild dogs, adding to the park’s allure.

Birdwatchers will find Samburu a paradise, with over 450 bird species recorded. The birdlife includes species from the arid northern bush country as well as riverine forest species. Noteworthy are the Lesser Kestrel and the Taita Falcon, both of which are of global conservation concern and utilize the reserve. Additionally, the reserve is home to five species categorized as vulnerable: the African Darter, Great Egret, White-headed Vulture, Martial Eagle, and the Yellow-billed Ox-pecker. The Pancake Tortoise (Malacochersus tornieri), critically endangered and protected under CITES, is also found here.
